遁入隐秘的镜中之境 / Venturing into the Hidden Depths of the Mirror
NOVA新星竞赛单元的创立，扎根于对 “成长影像” (coming-of-age imagery) 的向内问话以及对其边界的试探。在影展与影像类别的日常语境下，“成长”常与青少年的形象以及其生命阶段交织，让我们期待某种限定时空内的个体蜕变，或是得以投射对于少年时代莽撞、生命力，甚至迷茫的情愫。但也许我们忽略了“成长”本身意味着一种动势、一个持续的，流动的过程——它不该被具象的标准与规则绑定，也并不是只属于青年创作者的专属场域。当我们回望自身，是否会发现自己可以触及足以超越时间与空间的核心体验，进行一场“相当于某种史前的探险”的生命回溯（北岛，《城门开》）？
如同《破碎之音》（Dysphonias，Manuela Giraldo）通过剪切旧照、动画以及实拍的形式，去探索失音父亲的回忆和他不为女儿所知的一面，将病痛与过去转换为父女生活新的认知与开端。《分离之地》（That Split-up Place, Inés Pintor Sierra, Pablo Santidrián) 跟随两位男孩从孩童时期到白发的年月间不断变化的关系与情感历程，描绘亲密关系中混杂着欢喜与失落的复杂情感维度。而手绘动画《大蠢蛋》(Supersilly, Veronica Martiradonna) 更是钻入回忆的感官意识，去追溯在童年时埋下的伤痛种子。我们期待，当“成长”作为生命的永恒议题，引领我们超越时间空间以及形式的束缚，融化回忆与当下的界限，将引发最具有生命力与自我启示的创作。
在关注亲密、私人体验的同时，“成长影像”也可以是一面时刻照应社会现实的广阔镜面。在福柯的《关于其他空间》(Des Espace Autres, 1967)一文中，他将镜子内的世界比喻为异托邦（heterotopias），一个根植于现实文化、社会中又同时与他们所对立的空间。在其中存在一种混合的共生体验。人们不仅看到了自己，也看到了那些自己所不在的地方。《春卷》（Spring Roll, Emiliano Urbina）的少年选择拿起手边的相机，行走于智利故乡的大街小巷中，用近乎民族志的纪录方式看待城市在发展中所保留与逝去的样貌，审视自我与故乡的关系。《瓷》（Porcelain，Annika Birgel）与《狂怒》（Furious, Thomas Vernay)，则选择分别聚焦德国小岛上的婚庆传统以及法国真实的“问题少女”改造中心，通过具体的社会境遇反映女性的创伤，她们丰富、私人的个体空间以及超越分歧的共鸣及友谊。在这些现实的社会景观与空间中，青年与成年已久的创作者在心理与地理上回到自己的 “故乡”，浸入记忆中的生活环境，重新感知自我的凝视。
在生活的细微之处，成长随变化与寻觅涌动。每一次镜中折返的目光都是自我的映射，也在真实和虚幻之间重塑着“我”与“我的生存空间”。NOVA的影像将带我们遁入隐秘的镜中之境，构建他们与我们之间，复杂、多面的平行时空。（桑霓）
The creation of the NOVA Competition is rooted in a reflective inquiry into "coming-of-age imagery" and an exploration of its boundaries. In the usual contexts of film festivals and genre classifications, "coming-of-age" is often intertwined with the imagery of adolescents and their own stages of life, leading us to expect individual transformation within certain framing of time and space, or to project our nostalgia for the impetuousness, vitality, or confusion of the time of youth. Yet perhaps we overlook that "coming-of-age" itself implies a momentum—a continuous, flowing process. It shouldn't be bound by rigid definitions or belong exclusively to young creators. When we look back on our own lives, might we discover core experiences that transcend time and space, sparking a journey of "prehistoric exploration" into the self (Beidao, The City Gate Opens)?
Just as Dysphonias (Manuela Giraldo) uses collages of old photos, animation, and live-action to explore memories of a father with aphasia and the parts of him unknown to his daughter, transforming illness and the past into new insights and beginnings in their lives together. That Split-up Place (Inés Pintor Sierra, Pablo Santidrián) follows two boys from childhood to old age, mapping the shifting course of their relationship and the intricate dimensions of intimacy, blending joy and loss. And the hand-drawn animation Supersilly (Veronica Martiradonna) dives into the sensory consciousness of memories to trace the pain sown in childhood. We hope that, as "coming-of-age" emerges as a timeless theme, it will guide us beyond the constraints of time, space, and form, dissolving the boundary between memory and the present, sparking creation that is vibrant with vividness and self-discovery.
While focused on intimate, personal experiences, "coming-of-age imagery" can also serve as a vast mirror reflecting social realities. In Foucault’s Of Other Spaces (Des Espace Autres, 1967), he describes the world within a mirror as a heterotopia—a space rooted in real culture and society, yet simultaneously reflecting them, allowing a mixed, joint experience in between. We not only see ourselves but also see where we are not. In Spring Roll (Emiliano Urbina), a boy in his early twenties picks up a camera for a walk amongst the streets of his hometown in Chile, documenting the evolving landscape of the city with an almost ethnographic gaze, contemplating his selfhood’s relationship with his homeland. Porcelain (Annika Birgel) and Furious (Thomas Vernay) turn their focus to wedding traditions on a German island and the only French educational detention center for adolescent girls, respectively, exploring female trauma and their complex inner spaces, and friendships that transcend division. In these real social spaces, young and experienced filmmakers alike return, both psychologically and geographically, to their “homelands,” immersing themselves in environments deeply embedded in memory, sensing anew and reforming the self-gaze toward their place and identity.
In life's subtle moments, growth surges alongside change and discovery. Every gaze returned in the mirror reflects the self, reshaping the "I" and "my space of existence" between the real and the imaginary. The films of NOVA will lead us to venture into this secret realm of the mirror, constructing parallel times and spaces between them and us—complex, multifaceted, and ever-evolving. (Iris, Sang Ni)
